Arctic Alaska is an ecosystem largely covered by tundra and rock consisting of mountain ranges, river valleys and coastal plains which are home to Dall sheep, grizzly bears, caribou, moose, wolves, wolverines, and hundreds of species of birds and small game. The Alaskan Arctic is an area approximately the size of California bisected by the iconic Brooks Range, flanked on the south by the Yukon River Boreal Forest and on the north by the vast Coastal Plain and the Arctic Ocean. The Arctic is dominated by massive areas of Public Land. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the largest protected area in America. Alaska Outfitters Unlimited has the premier Concession in the Refuge.
Alaska Outfitters Unlimited operates under a Concession in The 8 Million acre Mollie Beattie Wilderness portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The Concession is slightly over two million acres located right in the heart of Brooks Range Dalls Sheep habitat. This area is dominated by tall mountains cut deeply by rivers and streams flowing to the Arctic Ocean. Vegetation is sparse and the only trees tall enough to hide game are patches willows and the occasional small cottonwood along the river bottoms. Although this area contains some of the tallest mountains in the Brooks, most Dall's Sheep live at elevations of 3000 to 5000 feet. Grizzly bears are abundant and caribou and wolves can be taken as an extra on all of our hunts in this area. Dall's Sheep are the main focus of our hunts in this area. Sheep hunting is a true passion, serious sheep hunters will advise the inexperienced: "when sheep hunting gets in your blood it is there to stay." Dall Sheep offer one of the most attractive trophies and the most delicious meat in the hunting world. Our hunts in the Arctic Refuge begin with a lengthy bush flight of over one hundred miles. All of our hunts in the Refuge are traditional back pack hunts or float hunts. Communications are provided through satellite phone but after drop off you will be alone with your guide for the duration of the hunt. Expect miles of hiking along river beds and along game trails. We will adjust to match your pace but please remember that you physical condition can be the difference between success and failure in a wilderness hunt. These "Exclusive Use" Concessions are awarded by an intensive, competitive application process and we are the only Outfitter authorized to conduct hunts in this area. Although this is public land and And Alaska Residents may conduct a "do it yourself" hunt we do not have any competition from other outfitters. This is the distinct advantage of hunting on Federal Lands in Alaska. There is no limit to the number of guides that may operate on State land units so it can be quite crowded.
